Requirements of the Artist/Writer:
- Must be over 21
- Need to have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field and pursuing art or writing as a professional career or if self-taught have pursued art or writing as a professional career

- Completion of a competitive application process
- Artist’s and writer’s applications will be considered based on their work submitted, their interest in the program, and their proposed collaboration with a partnering organization if the opportunity is offered.
- Selected artists/writer will correspond with the Good Hart Artist Residency staff and nonprofit partners about logistics and arrangements.
- Good Hart Artist Residency alumni are allowed to re-apply after a three-year hiatus from the program. Alumni seeking residency must submit a complete application including recent work samples and current resume.
Your application must include:
- Preference for dates of residency
- Resume including related experience and website information
- Statement of intent including a one or two paragraph project description outlining your purpose for the residency
- Two references including contact information
- Application fee of $25 dollars U.S.
- If you select a residency in collaboration with one of our community partners please provide a brief summary of the community event or workshop you would offer during your residency. Please review the partner’s page carefully regarding the type of collaboration the partner is looking for with an artist or writer.
- Visual artists shall submit images of 6-9 examples of artwork, images should include, title, medium and creation date for each work submitted.
- Writers must be currently working on a project. Writers shall submit three to five pages of a work in progress and an excerpt of no more than ten pages of a completed work. Samples of previously published work must include a link to the published work or information for accessing the published work. Projects may be in poetry, short stories, novels, essays, plays, screenplays, and/or creative nonfiction. Writing submissions must be in English, please.
Timeline for 2019 Program
- Application deadline is January 15, 2019
- Notification of acceptance by phone or email between February 22-25, 2019
- Artist commitment to the residency is due March 4, 2019
(We are currently in the process of building a new residency space and studio space located at 910 N. Lamkin Rd in Good Hart! We can not guarantee that the construction will be complete for the 2019 residency calendar so the accommodations described below are the existing and frankly charming accommodations. At a minimum, we do expect to have the studio space completed by May 2019. Please follow our Instagram and Facebook page to keep up to date on our building project.)
The current resident artist is housed in an apartment/studio space on a residential property owned by the host family. Given the size of the accommodations, the residency is best suited to an individual artist. The apartment/studio is located above a garage and is accessible only by stairs. Note: The current apartment is not handicap accessible.
The apartment includes:
- Small sitting area
- Private bathroom with shower
- Queen size bed
- Bedding and towels provided
- Access to laundry facilities in the main residence
- Mobile phone reception and internet access available but not always reliable
- Radio reception but no television reception (TV is available to play DVDs)
- Kitchenette: sink, microwave, small refrigerator, and kitchen table
- Basic supplies provided: miscellaneous cleaning items, shampoo, soap
- The artist in residency apartment and property are a nonsmoking area
- No pets are allowed
- Due to the solitary, focused nature of the residency, overnight guests are not allowed without prior approval from the host
- Approximately 12 by 24-foot studio space
- Natural and track lighting
- Work tables
- Easels including a travel/field easel
- Basic miscellaneous art supplies, drop cloth, mineral spirits, rags, waste disposal
Note: All other painting/art supplies to be provided by the artist and should be mailed well in advance of the residency. Local shopping for art supplies is limited.
- Residents need to arrange their own transportation to and from Northern Michigan (pick up from local airports in Pellston or Traverse City or pick up from local bus stations can be arranged).
- A bike will be made available to the resident.
- The resident will be housed within walking distance of Lake Michigan beaches, a nature preserve and the small community of Good Hart.
