Adrienne Defendi

Adrienne Defendi is a visual artist whose interests in memory, narrative, and materiality inform her photographic expression and artistic process. Working across different mediums, from analog to alternative photographic processes, printmaking, and pewter casting, her art practice charts elements of loss and renewal, and the boundless possibilities within reiteration and experimentation. Adrienne has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, and has curated photo-based gallery exhibitions in San Francisco and Milwaukee. She lives and works in the San Francisco Bay area.

Artist Statement

My practice focuses on process and experimenting with materiality, often with time, shifting light, ritual, and the natural environment as collaborators. I am drawn to accumulation and reiterative imagery to create visual compositions to commemorate and memorialize. Inspired by the specifics of a location, I observe and listen deeply to the environment in order to trace its transformation, fragility, and resilience. Attuned to the cycles of life, I am inspired by the ever-shifting relationship among the natural and the human world, and our presence and meaning within.

While at the Good Hart Artist Residency, I will further deepen my art practice and experimentation within the varied ecosystems – from the lake and its dunes, to forest nature preserves and marshes. The environment itself will guide and inspire: I will research local tree species, document tree-scars with paper impressions, and create an archive of botanicals with cyanotypes. I welcome discovering new processes, connections, and imagery within the beauty and dynamic landscapes of Good Hart.
