New this year, Good Hart Artist Residency will offer a Writer Friends residency June 13-27, 2024. This experience is open to a pair of writers who have a history of sharing work together. We recognize that writing is not always a solitary endeavor, and having a trusted reader is a key piece of the writing process. In this residency, we will offer two cabins–one for each writer–on a property near Cross Village, just a few miles up the road from Good Hart. The cabins are historic, built in the 1940s, and are on the property of generous hosts Jamie MacKenzie and Barrie Bates, where they also have a home. The property is wooded and spacious and has plenty of spots for writer friends to share each other’s company, including on a deck with panoramic views of Lake Michigan and on the beach below. The cabins, full of vintage furnishings and historic charm with the advantage of high speed internet, offer private space for writing in addition to the collaboration.
The friends will share a community event, which should be proposed in the application.
Writers should each submit an application. Both writers will be asked why they want to share a residency with their writer friend, including any relevant details about the history of their friendship. Keep in mind when proposing a community event that it will be shared between the friends and should represent participation from both. Please name your writer friend so we can match applications.
Both applications should display strong writing and will be selected on the merit of both writers’ work.
Unfortunately, the cabins are not accessible to wheelchairs. If you require an accessible space and would like to apply for the Writer Friends residency, this can be arranged. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
