Angie Kim

Angie Kim moved as a preteen from Seoul, South Korea, to the suburbs of Baltimore. After graduating from Interlochen Arts Academy, she studied philosophy at Stanford University and attended Harvard Law School, where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Her debut novel, Miracle Creek, won the Edgar Award and was named one of the 100 best mysteries and thrillers of all time by Time. Happiness Falls, her second novel, was an instant New York Times bestseller, a Good Morning America and B&N book club pick, Virginia Literary Award winner, and Oprah Daily’s #1 novel of 2023. Her short fiction and essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Southern Review, New Letters, and Vogue. She is a board member of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation and The Writer’s Center.

Artist Statement

Angie Kim will be working on her third novel, which is about a group of estranged relatives who long to reconnect for one last reunion at a family ancestral gravesite. The work is about the power of physical connection in the absence of speech and language—connection with loved ones and, ultimately, with one’s homeland. Lakeside Northern Michigan is a special place for Angie, a place she considers her artistic home and the place where she began writing her current novel-in-progress, and she is grateful for the opportunity to continue her work here.
