Composer-IN-RESIDENCE
January 6 – 23, 2025
Jilaine Wheatcroft
Jilaine Wheatcroft is a composer, producer, music educator and multi-instrumentalist performer based in Oxford, UK. Under the alias ‘Lane J’, Jilaine composes cinematic orchestral, electronic synth and guitar music through digital compositions, and writes acoustic piano- and guitar-based folk. Through music, Jilaine explores the notion of taking up space and making noise, creating as a means for self development and expression.

Jilaine has performed original songs in collaboration at various events including Womanity Festival, at Ovada Gallery and Modern Art Oxford, and with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Sheldonian Theatre. The past year has involved playing drums on Zahra Haji Fath Ali’s For You Tour in November 2023; playing synth, guitar and vocals to accompany Oxford-based Hannah Lou Larsen; and being lead guitarist as part of post-punk supergroup Atomic Flame.
Jilaine also independently teaches piano and guitar, and runs workshops at local charity YWMP (Young Women’s Music Project) which provides a safe space for young women, trans, and non-binary people to feel comfortable to explore and grow their passion for music. Jilaine sees music as a medium for getting people empowered together and feeling united in shared values.
Artist Statement
During my residency, I will be writing, recording and self-producing an exploratory EP of songs that have strong themes of identity and community. As part of this, I will be running a songwriting workshop, collaborating with a group to create a song with a specific focus on community and shared values within Good Hart.
