Council Tree Cottages

This residency offers a historic cottage, built in the 1940s, located on a property near Cross Village just over four miles up the road from Good Hart. Use of the cottage for a two week writer residency is provided by generous hosts Jamie MacKenzie and Barrie Bates. The property is wooded and spacious and includes a cantilevered deck with panoramic views of Lake Michigan and access to the beach below. This facility will be utilized for the Lakeshore Writers Friends Residency.

Blissful Cottage

This residency is owned by one of our board members. It is located 2.0 miles south of the main residency on the shores of Lake Michigan with access to miles of beach and beautiful sunsets.

This cozy vintage cabin, refreshed in 2025, blends rustic charm with modern comfort. Enjoy new lighting, a remodeled bath with a spacious shower, baseboard heat, a king bed, and a private deck perfect for coffee at sunrise or stargazing at night.

Skylights and screened windows invite soft light and lake breezes. It’s a place to unplug and unwind, surrounded by the sounds of the waves and the warmth of the fireplace. Please see the residency guide for Blissful Cottage for more details on the location.

Woody’s Retreat

This charming cabin is located 3 miles east of Good Hart on 10 private acres and it abuts the 696 acre Good Hart Farms Nature Preserve to the west.

The cabin includes a full kitchen, bath, bedroom, living area and a loft area. There is a large pole barn onsite which can be used as a studio space. Please see the residency guide for Woody’s Retreat for more details on the location.

Unfortunately, the cabin is not accessible to wheelchairs. Please note that this cabin is located near the Emmet Clay Sports Club and you will hear gun shots at times during the day.
